Opening a UAE business bank account: what actually decides it

Why compliance rejects files, which profiles struggle, and how to prepare so yours does not.

Updated

The licence takes days. The bank account takes weeks or months, and it is the step that derails more UAE setups than anything else.

Why it is hard

UAE banks operate under substantial anti-money-laundering obligations and have been penalised for weak compliance in the past. The institutional response has been conservative: enhanced due diligence on almost everything, and a willingness to decline rather than investigate.

Your company formation agent does not make this decision. The bank's compliance department does, independently, and no agent can overrule it. Any provider guaranteeing you an account is either misrepresenting their influence or planning to blame you later.

What compliance actually looks at

Source of funds comes first: where the initial capital comes from, documented. Business activity: what you actually do, with evidence — contracts, invoices, a website that existed before last week. Counterparties: which countries your customers and suppliers sit in, because some jurisdictions trigger automatic escalation.

Your own profile matters: nationality, residence, other directorships, and whether you appear on any screening list, including false positives from name matches.

And your free zone matters more than most people expect. A DMCC licence opens doors that an Ajman Media City licence does not. That is not fair, but it is observable.

Profiles that struggle

Crypto and digital-asset businesses, regardless of licence. Companies with no UAE residence visa for any shareholder. General trading licences with no specific product line. Businesses whose counterparties sit in high-risk jurisdictions. Companies whose shareholders cannot evidence source of wealth clearly.

None of these are refusals in principle. All of them mean a longer process and a higher chance of decline, and you deserve to know that before you pay rather than after.

How to prepare

Get your residence visa first where possible — an account application from a visa-holding resident director is treated differently from one without.

Prepare a genuine business plan with real numbers, real counterparties and real contracts. Have a professional website and a company email address, not a Gmail. Document the source of your capital with bank statements, a sale agreement or an employment history, not an assertion.

Apply to more than one bank in parallel. Sequential applications waste months, and a decline from one is not predictive of the others.

Realistic timings

Four to twelve weeks is normal. Longer is common for the profiles above. Some applicants end up with a digital banking provider instead of a traditional bank, which works for receiving and sending payments but may limit trade finance and cash handling.

Build this into your plan. The single most common failure we see is someone who committed to invoices, suppliers or a relocation on the assumption the account would be open in a fortnight.
